As any Southern Floridian knows, the AC unit of your home isn’t just a “luxury.” With as hot as it can get in Florida, particularly in the summer (and this summer so far has definitely proven to be a hot, sticky, and humid one!), your home’s AC unit can certainly be classified as a necessity. With that in mind, you will want to make sure that you are able to get your money’s worth when it comes to your unit, and extend the life as far as possible. Here are some tips on what you can do to make sure that the life of your home’s unit lasts as long as possible.

  1. Make sure to keep your unit’s condenser clean and clear.
  2. Cut down on the amount of work your home’s outside unit will have to do, and take measures to keep it well maintained. Your unit will run and operate more efficiently if it is kept clear of grass clippings, brush and shrubs, and other debris.
  3. Regular cleaning of the air conditioner (as per the instructions indicated in your owner’s manual) can help extend your unit’s life.
  4. The filters must be replaced regularly.
  5. Don’t block the cooling vents with furniture or other obstacles. A clear pathway for cool air to flow through into a room allows for easier cooling and better air circulation.
  6. Programmable thermostats are a great idea. Install one.
  7. Loose seams and gaps in the ducts should be routinely checked for, and addressed as needed.
  8. Don’t make your unit do all the work when it comes to cooling your home; ceiling fans and other alternative methods can certainly reduce the amount of work your unit will have to do when it comes to cooling your home and circulating air flow.
  9. The exhaust vent in your kitchen (which removes the hot air that is likely to build up while cooking) can be used regularly; however try to limit your use of bath exhausts to be as sparing as possible.
  10. Your unit will need to be serviced regularly. Like general wellness visits to a doctor to ensure you’re in tip-top working condition can help to ensure you don’t clunk out prematurely, regular servicing of your AC unit can do the same for your home’s air conditioning.
